Awards 2011 - Executive: BMW 5-series

Date: 25 January 2011

Already a winner of the big title - 2011 Business Car of the Year - the 5-series has followed on to grab our Executive Car of the Year title as well. This is win number 11 for the big BMW in this category, and is the first crown for the latest-generation model launched last year.

The new model was launched in saloon form last March, with the Touring estate version coming six months later. The M-sport trim level arrived at the same point as the Touring, a specification offering special alloys, tweaked suspension, styling alterations and leather sports seats among other upgrades, and proves particularly popular with those drivers that go for some of the larger engines.

The first executive saloon to get below 130g/km, the new 5-series was designed to offer a more comfortable long-distance cruise without damaging the sporty driving dynamics that BMW has built a reputation on, while cabin space and specification are also improved.

Competition will increase this year when the new Audi A6 arrives, but offering the kind of power output figures for the CO2 and mpg provided by the BMW will be a challenge that no rival has so far cracked.
