The start point for the best source of fleet information

Awards 2011 - Sporting Car: Audi R8

Date: 25 January 2011

For the second consecutive year Audi tops this category with the R8, although the brand has held the winning position for four years now, with the TT and A5 being previous winners.

The R8 has meant Audi has risen to the realms of the supercar, and its dynamic, head-turning looks warrant reactions that most cars could only dream of. Clearly it's not a natural fleet pick, with top fuel consumption of 21.2mpg and 310g/km CO2, but a handful of top execs can justify the near-£87,000 entry price.

After the introduction of a more powerful 5.2-litre V10 engine in 2009, Audi raised the bar once again in 2010, launching the Spyder, a convertible version, which propelled the R8 to the limelight once again. Initially only available as a V10 with a six-figure price to match, from this month, those with an open-top preference can opt for the cheaper V8 Spyder, which starts at £95,545. The fastest ever road-going Audi also launches in spring, the R8 GT (above), which achieves 0-62mph in 3.6 seconds.

It's hard to imagine an eco-friendly version, but in 2009, an electric concept, the R8 E-tron, was unveiled and sources say an EV production model of the car could arrive as soon as late 2012.
