Martyn Nash of Driver First Assist answers Barker's Dozen

Date: 10 August 2016   |   Author:

1 What was your first job?

I worked for Waitrose stacking shelves on a Friday evening and Saturday. I also worked on the wine counter and on the tills (top positions for Saturday workers). My first full-time job was with Carnation Foods as a territory manager in Nottingham.

2 What was your first company car, and what do you drive now?

I had a Ford Escort 1.1 Popular. I used to drive home from Derby to Hemel Hempstead and I could drive flat out without ever having to slow - it shows how traffic has changed! I am now lucky enough to drive one of the world's most attractive cars: an Aston Martin Vanquish.

3 What did you listen to on your last car journey?

Smooth Radio - they play hits from the '70s.

4 What one thing do you wish you could do better?

Be a more accomplished reader and to be able to play a musical instrument.

5 What's your biggest achievement?

Establishing a business in China (of course, that's after being married and having three children.)

6 What are your three favourite films?

The Italian Job (the original), East is East, Made In Dagenham.

7 What's the stupidest thing you've done?

I electrocuted myself whilst changing a light bulb.

8 What was the most hotly debated topic at your last meeting?

Brexit. I voted out.

9 What would be your specialist subject on Mastermind?

Useless facts.

10 What's the worst thing about your job?

Managing staff - it is the hardest part of my role yet the most rewarding.

11 What one law would you make or change?

Change the taxation system to zero-rate income tax but increase VAT, eliminating the need for tax returns and ending 'black money'.

12 What did you want to be when you grew up?

A racing driver. I now achieve this via my son (James) and it is much nicer and easier.

13 Who is your ideal celebrity date?

For a dinner date I would like Margaret Thatcher, Elton John and Stephen Hawking.
