The start point for the best source of fleet information

Mike Waters' blog: 10 January 2014 - New year, new vehicles

Date: 10 January 2014

Mike Waters is senior insight & consultancy manager at leasing and fleet management company Arval

As 2014 beds in, it's always good to reflect on the past 12 months, and I have to say, I have perceived 2013 as a year of great automotive innovation.

A combination of new models entering the market and new technology becoming available has made it a year of change.

Average CO2 has dropped significantly, mpg has improved, on board technology is getting even more useful, cars are safer and, of course, hybrid and electric vehicles are now more common.

I've had the opportunity to try a range of vehicles in 2013 and, in general, I've been really impressed.

The performance and the driving experience is getting better across pretty much all of the ranges and tough competition is clearly bringing out the best in the manufacturers.

One area where I believe we will see further development in 2014 is with the emergence of hydrogen vehicles.

Of course, they won't be a common sight on the roads from next year, but at least there will be options moving through for early adopters.

To try something new is exciting and, as I have found in recent months with electric vehicles, you can't properly assess the technology until you've driven one.

At Arval, we will shortly be getting a hydrogen vehicle to test. We've got a standard route and it will be really interesting to see how this new technology stacks-up against electric vehicles, hybrids and more traditional petrol and diesel variants.

So watch this space in 2014 when hopefully I can provide some answers!
