There's been a lot of coverage recently about driverless cars, and rightly so with the first UK trials kicking off in Greenwich, Bristol, Milton Keynes and Coventry.

Vince Cable seems to think that this will put the UK at the heart of the development of driverless vehicles and there's no doubt that it's a major investment and a big commitment from the Government.

As well as being a symbol of the future we expected to see many decades ago, driverless cars could signal safer, less congested driving which would be great. These latest trials follow a trial which Google has been running in the US for a while now but is the UK's first foray into this area.

In fact it seems that everyone is jumping on the bandwagon. The rumours are that Apple is launching a project to test and develop driverless cars and with such high profile players taking an active interest; momentum is only going to build.

While this is exciting stuff, we shouldn't forget that many areas of vehicle automation have been in place for some time. The cars that we drive today take control in many areas ranging from automated braking to keeping us within a motorway lane; even parking the vehicle for us. We are becoming accustomed to automation almost without realising it.

It's unlikely that the switch to driverless cars will be a swift one. What's more likely is a continuation of the current trend with more and more automated technology being added to our road cars and over time we will take less control of the vehicle and will put more faith in the technology.
