I've just taken the plunge and done something that only 67,000 other people in the UK have done: I've bought a brand new electric car. Using my credit card and ordering online, I've opted for a silver Tesla Model S - and it's arriving any day now.

I'm extremely positive about this. Firstly, because who wouldn't be thrilled by the arrival of a shiny new, cutting edge vehicle that promises a sub-three second 0-60mph time combined with almost silent cruising and fuel running costs that are virtually insignificant compared to petrol or diesel.

But secondly because I've spent a long time advocating a greener approach to fleet - and this move allows me to put the EV part of the theory into practice.

Arguments against EVs are holding far less weight these days. The government has made clear its interest in the ultra low emissions sector and infrastructure is growing. There are also some great apps such as Zap Map and PlugShare which can help EV drivers quickly and easily locate nearby charging points.

Some drivers have even made their personal charging points available to other EV users - and this sense of community is helping the technology become more available even for drivers venturing further from the beaten track.

We've also installed charging points at home and at Chevin's office, the latter at least partially powered by our 20kW electric roof, which has produced around 18,000kWh in the last year. Were that all usable for the Tesla, it would equate to more than 4400 monthly electric miles on average.

My thinking is this - the car's 250-mile range should be sufficient for virtually every journey I make. Combining this with a tiny amount of pre-planning will ensure that I can top-up the car whilst taking coffee breaks on longer journeys!

Sounds fool proof - and I'm about to find out whether it is.

In some of our BusinessCar blogs over the next year or so, I'll be writing about my real-world experiences of going fully electric - and I'm hoping to learn some lessons that will also be of use to our customers.
