The start point for the best source of fleet information

Shaun Sadlier's blog: The single most important message about driving at Christmas

Date: 13 December 2018

December traditionally brings two seasonal warnings for company car and van drivers - about the dangers of winter motoring and drink driving.

The fact that the same issues are raised every year tends to dull these messages a little but they remain hugely important. This time of year is high risk on the roads - with weather conditions and drink often factors.

That is why it is crucial that fleet managers continue to find new and interesting ways of communicating them to their drivers. At Arval, we have produced guides designed for distribution to employees about how to drive in winter conditions and driving after drinking. These are informative and easily shared online.

However, there is perhaps a more fundamental message for drivers about these two issues. That is, if you are at all worried about conditions on the roads or are concerned that your abilities are impaired by the effects of alcohol, don't drive. It's that simple.

Getting behind the wheel if you feel ill-equipped or under the influence of drink is not worth the risk, even if the consequences seem important at the time. More than anything, this is the point that businesses need to be communicating if we want our drivers to stay safe over the festive season.

Shaun Sadlier is head of consultancy at Arval.
