DETROIT SHOW: All-new Toyota Prius promises emissions fall

Date: 12 January 2009

Toyota has countered hybrid competition from arch rival Honda's new Insight by releasing the first details of its new Prius.

The third-generation petrol-electric hybrid model arrives in the UK in September, powered by a 1.8-litre engine rather than the previous model's 1.5.

Details aren't yet confirmed but Toyota said the model will improve on its predecessor's 104g/km CO2 emissions and 65.7mpg, while staying in the same price area starting at around £18,000. Confirmed CO2 and MPG figures won't be revealed until the Geneva motor show in March.

The interior has been completely redesigned and Toyota claims improvements in interior space, while the hybrid battery system is now smaller and lighter to improve efficiency and packaging.

The firm has confirmed, though, that the new model has a solar panel in the roof.
