Mercedes plans range of low capacity engines

Date: 30 October 2012   |   Author: Jack Carfrae

Mercedes is working on a series of low-capacity petrol and diesel engines due to go on-sale in its vehicles before the middle of the decade.

Reports suggest that the German firm has a 1.2-litre petrol and a 1.5-litre diesel in development, both of which are likely to duck under 100g/km and be clean and powerful enough to match similar, three-cylinder engines from rivals such as VW and BMW on performance and efficiency.

A spokesperson for Mercedes told BusinessCar the new generation of engines would arrive "in the next couple of years". He said they wouldn't necessarily coincide with the unveiling of new models or facelifts but would "tend to be evolutionary" in their introductions.
