Volkswagen Golf: First official pictures of all-new model

Date: 06 September 2012   |   Author: Jack Carfrae

The next generation Volkswagen Golf will be significantly lighter than the outgoing version and far more economical despite retaining roughly the same proportions.

The new model, which will be the seventh generation of VW's successful lower medium hatchback, will be launched in the UK?before the end of the year.

A weight saving of 100kg - depending on the model - over the existing car has been achieved, leaving the latest mk7 Golf with the same kerb weight as the mk4, which was built between 1997 and 2003.

The cleanest and most frugal Bluemotion model will offer 88.3mpg and 85g/km.

A spokesman for Volkswagen told BusinessCar: "The weight saving has a lot to do with the production methods. There have been new techniques in using steel for the car."

"The other big development is the infotainment screen, which has a haptic touch. As your hand approaches the screen it changes and brings up buttons to change other things."
