Cobra launches asset management security system

Date: 31 July 2013   |   Author: Jack Carfrae

Security and telematics firm Cobra has launched an asset management product aimed at the fleet, rental and contract hire markets.

Known as Cobra Asset Control and available from September, the system contacts the registered user automatically via text or email as soon as an accident occurs (called a First Notification of Loss) with a summary of the time, location and vehicle details, taking the responsibility from the driver.

The system operates out of a standard telematics black box and fitting involves around 30-40 minutes of vehicle downtime.

Three versions of Cobra Asset Control are available, the most advanced of which can 'lock down' the vehicle's engine by stopping the crankshaft from moving. For the lock down system, a relay is fitted to the engine, which Andrew Smith, managing director of Cobra, estimates may add "about 15 minutes" to the fitment time.

Speaking to BusinessCar, Smith continued: "The facility to manage vehicles via the web is not unique per se. [But] to have it on an engine relay is a bespoke thing. I think a lot of [rival] companies will shy away from this because of the engineering involved."

He continued: "For rental, we've configured the proposition in a way so that that [rental firms] can be trained to do [the fitting] themselves.

The system also works as a security measure to alert operators if vehicles are moved in unauthorised times and places.

"Fleets that come back to a depot at night can set the lock down to operate at certain times of day. A fleet manager would get an alert if a vehicle is moved outside of a certain area," Smith explained.

Monthly and annual payment plans are available and Smith says the system works out as "cheaper than [a Thatcham] Cat 6 [security system], which is circa £400-500".

The firm is also offering a 12-month package to rental companies whereby it can be installed, de-installed and refitted to another vehicle within that timeframe."
