New Mercedes Sprinter van hits Euro 6 emissions level

Date: 13 May 2013   |   Author: James Dallas

Mercedes-Benz has claimed its new Sprinter is the first van to meet the forthcoming Euro6 emissions standards.

The manufacturer said the large van, which is open to order in June with deliveries beginning in September, would also deliver class-leading fuel economy of 44.4mpg on the combined cycle.

The new model will continue to be powered by 2.2- and 3.0-litre diesel engines with power outputs ranging from 95hp to 190hp.

Mercedes said all the engines achieve Euro6 requirements for nitrogen oxides (NOx), total hydrocarbons (THC), and particulate mass emissions due to the Sprinter's BlueTec engine and SCR technology that injects AdBlue into the exhaust gas.

As an alternative to the diesel engines, the van will also be available with a Euro6-compliant supercharged four-cylinder natural gas engine featuring direct injection. The engine generates 156hp from a total displacement of 1.8-litres.

The Sprinter will be offered with both Eco-gear six-speed manual transmission and 7G-Tronic Plus seven-speed automatic transmission.

It comes with safety systems such as Crosswind Assist, a standard fit on all versions, and a host of optional features: Collision prevention Assist, Blind Spot Assist, Highbeam Assist and Lane Keeping Assist.

In line with Mercedes' current design language the Sprinter's radiator grille is now framed and more prominent than its predecessor's with the three slats perforated and wedge-shaped.

The headlights are now more angular with the covers on the reflector housings dividing them into separate segments.

The new hood is higher and Mercedes compared the more distinctly shaped bumpers to those found on SUVs. At the rear the van features double-segmented taillights.

The interior features a thicker steering wheel, chrome fittings if the multi-functional steering wheel is optioned and a redesigned gearshift lever knob.

The Sprinter is also fitted with a new-generation radio system that comes with Bluetooth telephone equipment and the Becker MAP PILOT navigation system.
