Vauxhall has cut the price of its Ampera plug-in hybrid range by £3500 with immediate effect, and dropped the entry-level Earth trim because the next trim up, the Positiv, is now well below £30,000 after the £5000 Government subsidy.
That model, which includes features such as rear-view camera and climate control, now costs £28,750, while the top-spec Electron is now priced at £30,495 after the Government has offered its share. That £5000 grant doesn't count towards the vehicle's P11D value, with the Ampera in the 5% band until the end of 2016, and guaranteed by the Government to be below the rate of conventional models until at least 2020.
"[The] Ampera's new price position brings the cost of electric motoring much nearer to that of a conventional vehicle," said Vauxhall managing director Duncan Aldred.
Ford has also released pricing for its electric Focus, which it is bringing to the UK in low numbers in response to demand from the corporate sector. Priced at £28,500 after the £5000 grant, the Focus Electric has an official range of 100 miles and top speed of 85mph.
Ford's fleet boss Phil Hollins told BusinessCar that the model will sell in "tiny volume", but that the company is "talking to one fleet in particular where it could be a good marketing opportunity for both of us".
"We will look for targeted opportunities to get more than just the sale," he said.
