99% of drivers wouldn't buy an electric car

An overwhelming majority of retail drivers would not consider buying an electric car, while just over 10% of motorists would not be interested in buying a hybrid vehicle.

That's according to a recent survey by advisory service PriceWaterhouseCoopers which asked 500 prospective car buyers, with 99% saying they would not consider buying an electric vehicle for personal use. The signal from the research suggests the alternative fuel market must be led by business sales.

Just over 10% (13%) of those questioned said they would not consider buying a hybrid car and the majority - 62% - only want a conventional engine.

"Customers expect manufacturers to shoulder the burden of ensuring their next car has minimal impact on the environment, but they remain less likely to opt for hybrids or electric cars themselves," said Phil Harold, PWC partner.

"Customers are conservative when it comes to their choice of car, yet expect innovation from manufacturers to help protect the climate. The challenge facing car manufacturers is to change the primary concern in buyers' minds from cost to conservation," said Harold.
