Ford confirms low CO2 diesel Focus ST details at Paris motor show

Date: 02 October 2014   |   Author: Daniel Puddicombe

Ford has revealed details of its new Focus ST, which will offer a diesel powertrain option for the first time. It will be on sale in the UK in early 2015.

Powering the ST is either a 2.0-litre diesel unit or a version of the 2.0-litre Ecoboost petrol unit. Both engines are already in the Focus range.

In the ST, the unit will produce 185hp, emit 110g/km CO2 and delivers a claimed 67.3mpg on the combined cycle, while the petrol engine offers 250hp, 41.5mpg and 159g/km CO2.

Both models come with stop/start technology as standard, with Ford claiming that the petrol unit is the most fuel-efficient petrol-powered Focus ST ever.

Both engines use a six-speed manual gearbox with gear ratios exclusive to the ST range that are also matched to each engine.

Two new technical advancements are debuting on the Focus ST: Ford's Adaptive Front Lighting feature adjusts the intensity and angle of the xenon headlamp beams according to vehicle speed, steering angle and distance to objects.

This provides optimal illusion, says the American car maker, while Cross Traffic Alert warns drivers reversing from parking spaces if other vehicles are about to cross the car's path.

The ST will also utilise the technology that is in the rest of the Focus range including the Sync2 connectivity system.

The range also includes Ford's active city stop collision avoidance system as first seen in the 2015 Mondeo.

No prices have been announced yet, but expect the petrol model to cost more than £22,000 - the price of the current ST - owing to a higher specification level than the outgoing model.

"The new Focus ST delivers an even more sophisticated balance of performance, driving dynamics, refinement and style," said Joe Bakaj, vice president of product development at Ford.

"Even more enjoyable and rewarding to drive and with the choice of diesel power for the first time, the new Focus ST is in a class of its own," said Bakaj.
