Renault reveals 22g/km future Clio hybrid concept

Date: 17 September 2014   |   Author: Daniel Puddicombe

Renault has revealed what could be a future Clio with a 22g/km CO2 hybrid concept called the Eolab.

The concept will debut at the Paris motor show next month and the French company claims it can achieve 282mpg.

The Eolab shaves 400kg off an equivalent Clio thanks to being made of lightweight materials, while active aerodynamics - more commonly seen on hypercars - help reduce drag by 30%.

To achieve the mpg and CO2 figures, it is powered by a 1.0-litre 3-cylinder petrol unit with 75hp, which is mated to a 6.7kwh battery with a 41-mile range.

The Eolab is also a technology showcase for Renault and previews around 100 developments which could feature on future models over the next 10 years.

The French car maker has developed a three-speed clutchless gearbox as part of the Eolab concept. The first two ratios are linked to the electric motor, and the third ratio is linked to the hybrid unit. Renault claims that gearshifts do not need the use of a clutch thanks to the company developing a specific control unit.
