Confusion reigns for fleets ahead of paper counterpart abolition, says Licencecheck

Date: 19 May 2015   |   Author: Daniel Puddicombe

Fleets are being misinformed about the ways they can check employees' licenses ahead of the abolition of the paper counterpart on 8 June, according to Licencecheck.

The DVLA launched the View My Driving Licence service for individuals to access their driving licence earlier this year, but according to the driver licence checking service's managing director, Richard Brown, the fleet industry is confused about the ways in which they can legally check licenses.

The DVLA said the View My Driving Licence is for driver use only and that any use of the service by third parties, including an employer, is an offence under the Data Protection Act.

"It's an incredibly confusing time for companies who need to manage their fleet drivers within the confines of the law. Some of the fleets we have spoken to have been told it's okay to use this service if they've obtained a written mandate from the employee concerned," said Brown. "But this conflicted with our understanding, so we asked the DVLA and received a definitive response stating that it is 'intended for drivers to check their own records only, and should not be used by third parties to access driver records."

The DVLA is set to launch its Share Driver Licence Service ahead of the abolition. It will allow employers and other third-parties to check a a licence by using a unique single-use code issued by the driver.
