Just under half of the UK's road users want a zero tolerance drink-drive limit according to a survey by a leasing website.
The poll asked 3891 drivers in England and Wales and found 46% would like to see the drink-drive limit set to zero, where a single drop of alcohol could render a driver unfit to drive.
In England, Wales and Northern Ireland, the legal limit for drivers is 80 milligrams of alcohol for every mililitres of blood. The legal limit is 50 mig per 100ml per 100ml in Scotland.
According to the survey conducted by Flexed.co.uk, just under a third (31%) would like the limit to be reduced to mimic the law in Scotland, while 23% would like the limit to remain as it is.
The survey also revealed drivers want tougher punishments than at present with 66% saying courts should impose more serious punishments on drink-drivers, while 31% believe the punishments are about right, and 5% think the current level of punishment is too harsh.
"Last Christmas saw the numbers of people failing road-side breath tests falling, but it's clear that the majority want to drive boozers off the road completely," said Flexed.co.uk spokesperson, Mark Hall.
"Despite the fall in numbers, around one-in-ten people breathalysed were over the limit. That's a frightening statistic when you sit down and think about it," said Hall.
