The Hyundai Tucson has been awarded the maximum five stars in the latest round of Euro NCAP's crash tests.
The crossover achieved high scores in all areas of assessment, proving much stronger than its predecessor, which was tested in 2006.
Despite offering autonomous emergency braking technology as an option, it was not included in the rating, as there is not expected to be a high uptake, Euro NCAP said.
Meanwhile, both the Vauxhall Viva city car and Mazda MX5 sports car scored four stars.
During the Viva's frontal crash test, the dummy's head slid off the airbag, and in the side pole impact, the chest area was poorly protected, while in the frontal test, the driver slipped under the seatbelt, resulting in a risk of knee injuries.
The MX-5 was praised for its pedestrian protection thanks to a pop-up bonnet fitted as standard, however it was criticised for the lack of autonomous braking technology.
