Volvo introduces new four-cylinder Euro6 engines

Date: 28 April 2015   |   Author:

Volvo has reduced CO2 outputs across most of its range by replacing all of its front-wheel-drive models with the new four-cylinder Euro6 compliant Drive-E engines.

The Swedish brand said the roll-out of its own in-house built engines marks a move away from its reliance on other manufacturers for powertrains.

New to selected models across the range are petrol powered T2 and T3, and diesel powered D2 and D3 engines. They join the four-cylinder T5/T5AWD and D4 Drive-E engines which were launched in 2014.

The engines are built with a maximum of 2.0-litres and four cylinders, using a mixture of turbocharging, supercharging and electrification to produce varying power outputs. Volvo says this configuration allows for lower weight, size and complexity, all resulting in lower emissions and fuel consumption.

V40

The new 2.0-litre diesel engine in the V40 drops emissions down to 94g/km on the 120hp model and to 99g/km on the 150hp model.

The V40 also gets a new 1.5-litre petrol auto with power outputs of 122hp and 152hp and the same CO2 output of 129g/km for both.

V40 Cross Country

The V40 Cross Country sees emissions also drop below 100g/km to 96g/km on the D2 and 99g/km on the D3 diesels.

S60

The S60 gets two new petrol engines and two new diesel engines. These include 120hp D2, 150hp D3 and 190hp D4 diesels with emissions outputs of 99g/km, 102g/km and 102g/km respectively. The S60 also gets a new 2.0-litre petrol T3 manual with emissions of 131g/km and a T3 auto at 135g/km.

V60

The V60 gets new the new 2.0-litre D2 and D3 diesel engines at 101g/km and 105g/km. The previous D4 diesel engine has had a power increase from 181hp to 190hp.

The V60 hybrid has a new engine name, the D6 Twin Engine, bringing it in-line with the naming on the XC90 hybrid. The V60 is also available with the new 2.0-litre petrol and 1.5-litre petrols at 135g/km and 138g/km.

XC60

The XC60 gets power increases across its engine range and a CO2 reduction of 20g/km on the D4 and D5 all-wheel drive models to 149g/km on both. This comes despite a 9hp power increase to 190hp and 220hp respectively.

V70

The V70 gets increased power by 14hp to 150hp for the new D3 with lower emissions down to 108g/km on the Business Edition model.

XC70

There has been an emissions reduction for the D4 and D5 all-wheel drive models which brings emissions down by 16g/km on both to 153g/km.
