Honda has revealed the 10th generation of its Civic hatchback at the Geneva motor show today.

The new model - unveiled in prototype form - is due to go on sale in early 2017, and will be powered by a range of three drivetrain options - 1.0-litre and 1.5-litre petrol engines and an updated 1.6-litre diesel unit.

The new motors are based on the Japanese company's Earth Dream Technology range, which aim to deliver class-leading power for displacement as well as high economy figures.

The new Civic is wider, lower and longer than the current model, which Honda says gives the car an "assured" stance, with the front end featuring LED daytime running lights.

"The Civic is a core model for Europe with a strong sales and manufacturing heritage in the region," said Jean-Marc Streng, general manager of Honda          Motor Europe's car division. "The all-new Civic hatchback continues this tradition, and we hope it will continue to be a key volume pillar for the European business."

Honda also confirmed that the Civic will be produced in the UK, with a 270 million euro investment in the firm's plant, as part of what Honda calls its "long-term vision for the European plant in Honda's global operations".
