Thousands of breakdowns predicted over bank holiday weekend

Date: 24 August 2016   |   Author: Daniel Puddicombe

Breakdown provider Green Flag has estimated there will be nearly 40,000 breakdowns on Britain's roads this bank holiday weekend.

According to the company, the biggest cause of the breakdowns will be flat and faulty batteries (8771) followed by punctures (5283), engine faults (3977) and clutch errors (1295).

The breakdown prediction follows on from research earlier this week suggesting the bank holiday get-away could herald the worst congestion in a decade.

To combat breakdowns, Green Flag has launched a plug-in telematics unit which monitors the vehicle's battery and management systems to alert motorists and fleet managers of any issues before the vehicle breaks down.

Green Flag said its device, called Alert Me, could save Brits over 38,000 hours a year waiting by the roadside.

Costing £35 per vehicle, the device sends alerts to an app once it detects a problem, allowing motorists to get the vehicle fixed before it fails, while the app can also be used to book rescue cover and track the status of the technicians en-route.

"We created Green Flag Alert Me with our customers' needs at the core.  A breakdown is never pleasant for anybody and, if it can be prevented, it should be," said Neil Wilson, head of rescue at Green Flag. "Although breakdowns can't be avoided every time, with Green Flag Alert Me drivers will be saved from unnecessary breakdowns caused by faults they weren't aware of. Now, we'll be with them on the whole journey - letting them know about potential issues before they turn into problems."
