All-new Suzuki Swift shown at Geneva

Date: 07 March 2017   |   Author: Daniel Puddicombe

Suzuki has showcased its all-new Swift supermini at the Geneva motor show.

The model's European debut follows on from the launch of the car in the Japanese domestic market late last year, and it is due to arrive in the UK on 1 June.

It is the third model - after the Baleno and Ignis - to be developed on the firm's new platform, which helps the new model to weigh up to 120kg less than its predecessor.

Despite being 10mm shorter than the outgoing model, the wheelbase is 20mm later than the outgoing model, creating more interior space for passengers and luggage, which has helped the boot to grow by a quarter (to 245 litres) compared with the old model.

Three engines are offered - the firm's 111hp 1.0-litre 'Boosterjet' which debuted in the Baleno last summer, a 90hp 1.2-litre petrol and a mild hybrid option.

The hybrid is based on the Boosterjet engine but with an intergrated starter motor in order to produce electricity through regenerative braking, and cuts emissions to 97g/km of CO2.

Three trim levels are available - SZ3, SZ-T and SZ5, with pricing set to be announced in May.  Standard equipment includes aircon, a DAB radio, LED daytime running lights, 15-inch alloy wheels and front electric windows.

The middle trim level, meanwhile, adds a rear-view camera, smartphone compatibility and 16-inch wheels, while the top-of-the-range models gain a satnav, a forward detection system - which packages autonomous emergency braking, lane departure warning and high beam assist - and front and rear electric windows.
