EV showcase centre to open in Milton Keynes

Date: 20 February 2017   |   Author: Daniel Puddicombe

Electric vehicle charging infrastructure company Chargemaster has been awarded a contract to set up and run the UK's first multi-brand EV showroom.

Called the EV Experience Centre, the centre is due to launch in Milton Keynes in the spring as a way to encourage the uptake of electric vehicles.

The centre has been funded through the Go Ultra Low Cities initiative - a Government funded scheme to encourage the uptake of low-emission transport - after Milton Keynes was awarded £9m in January 2016.

According to Milton Keynes Council, the project aims to help people understand the benefits of EV ownership, while businesses will be able to test-drive a range of vehicles on a short- or long-term basis.

In addition to the centre, £2.3m has been invested to expand Milton Keynes' charging infrastructure network. The investment will see Chargemaster installing 50 points around the town as well as two filling station-style hubs to recharge.

At present, Chargemaster operates 170 standard chargers and 56 rapid chargers in and around the town.

Brian Matthews, head of transport innovation at Milton Keynes Council, said: "Our commitment to making Milton Keynes a go-to destination and flagship Go Ultra Low city starts with our residents. We're delighted to be working with Chargemaster on this project, and are confident that the team is best-placed to champion the EV sector, considering their knowledge and experience of the industry."

Chargemaster CEO David Martell added: "The centre will be the first of its kind and we are sure it will pave the way for other cities to follow. We are looking forward to welcoming Milton Keynes shoppers and showing them everything that going green has to offer."
