Every Volvo car to be fitted with an electric motor from 2019

Date: 05 July 2017   |   Author: Daniel Puddicombe

Volvo has announced that every car it launches from 2019 will have an electric motor.

The Swedish company claimed its move "marks the historic end of cars that only have an internal combustion engine and places electrification at the core of its future business".

In addition, the firm announced it will launch five fully-electric models between 2019 and 2021, three of which will be Volvo models with the other two carrying the Polestar branding of its high-performance arm.

According to Volvo, these five new models will be supplemented with a range of petrol and diesel plug-in and mild hybrid units, with the firm envisioning a future where traditional engines are phased out and replaced by engines enhanced with electric options.

However, the firm will continue to build earlier models which are powered entirely by petrol or diesel beyond 2019.

The company currently fits its twin-engine plug-in hybrid unit to a number of models, including the XC90 and V60.

Volvo claimed the announcement "represents one of the most significant moves by any car maker to embrace electrification", although all Lexus models come with a hybrid as standard, aside from the LC, where a hybrid version is optionally available, while the likes of Tesla only produce fully-electric models.

Volvo's announcement follows its decision to spin its Polestar performance arm into a separate brand offering high-performance EVs.

The brand also announced plans for climate-neutral manufacturing operations by 2025 and a sales target of one million electrified cars by 2025.

"This is about the customer," said Hakan Samuelsson, president and chief executive of Volvo. "People increasingly demand electrified cars and we want to respond to our customers' current and future needs. You can now pick and choose whichever electrified Volvo you wish."

Samuelsson added: "This announcement marks the end of the solely combustion engine-powered car. Volvo has stated that it plans to have sold a total of one million electrified cars by 2025. When we said it we meant it. This is how we are going to do it."
