Fleets invited to test real-time NOx estimating device

Date: 12 May 2017   |   Author: Daniel Puddicombe

Fleets are being invited to trial a new device which will estimate the real-time NOx and CO2 emissions of vehicles.

Called Air.Car, the device has been created by telematics company Tracker and the firm is seeking fleets to test it for six months from December.

The telematics unit connects to the car's onboard diagnostic unit, and it is estimated using the device will reduce NOx emissions by up to 50% through improved driving styles.

Tracker was recently awarded a share of £62m from the Government to help develop the solution to help fleet managers drive down emissions, saving fuel and money.

During the trial, managers will have access to fleet management software, which will show:

  • Real-time CO2 and NOx emissions
  • Vehicle location and real-time and historic trip data
  • Daily, weekly, monthly idling time figures
  • Fuel usage by vehicle, by trip, including wasted fuel
  • Vehicle health - notification of fault codes
  • Crash notifications
  • Driver behaviour analytics

The firm has enlisted university Imperial College London to help analyse the data, while the company claimed an existing real-time CO2 data stream helps to save customers 15% in fuel costs through more efficient driving styles.

"It is our belief that companies, local authorities and the public all want to help clean up the air we breathe," said David Wilson, Tracker's chief operating officer.  "Towns and cities across the UK have dangerous levels of NOx§ significantly over legally allowed limits, and increasing urbanisation and congestion are only set to magnify this problem. Air.Car will be able to help deliver much-needed emissions reduction in a smarter, cheaper and fairer way than some of the alternatives that are being considered."
