Fleets told to keep walkaround checks interesting to avoid complacency

Date: 03 May 2017   |   Author: Daniel Puddicombe

Fleets have been urged to keep walkaround safety checks interesting in order to avoid complacency setting in.

That's according to fleet software company FleetCheck, which claimed it regularly sees examples of the effectiveness of the check declining over time because of familiarity.

According to Peter Golding, managing director of the company, fleets should regularly use social media and send emails to remind employees of the importance of the checks.

"The walkaround check is very much at the frontline of risk management for fleets, whether it is a simple tyres, levels and lights check for a company car driver or the more formal and controlled checks that commercial vehicle drivers have to complete under Vehicle and Operator Services Agency regulations," Golding said. "What these checks have in common is that they are prone to complacency over time, that drivers start to tick the boxes without really looking properly at the areas they are supposed to be inspecting. It's simply a case of overfamiliarity - a very human problem."?

In an attempt to combat this issue, the firm has launched a Walkaround Check app, which can schedule, carry out, audit and confirm inspections, while it can also integrate with the firm's fleet management software, which will tell managers once these checks have been completed.
