Infiniti reveals new QX50

Date: 01 December 2017   |   Author: Rachel Boagey

Infiniti has revealed the full details of its all-new QX50, which is due to make its global premiere at the 2017 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, US, in January.

The model, which Infiniti says showcases the brand's vision for a next-generation mid-size premium SUV, will sport a 2.0-litre VC turbo engine that generates 268hp while providing an estimated 27mpg.

The production model remains true to the design of the QX50 Concept and QX Sport Inspiration, and features an all-new front-engine and front-wheel drive platform. Infiniti says the car sets new standards for refinement, rigidity and interior space in the compact premium SUV segment.

Christian Meunier, Infiniti's global division vice-president, said: "The QX50 is the most important vehicle we have ever launched, and it embodies everything the brand stands for: beautiful design, advanced technology and empowering performance. As a premium, mid-size SUV, it's the right vehicle at the right time in one of the world's fastest-growing segments."

Infiniti says the QX50 features high-quality materials to make the cabin comfortable, and the engine is the first application of a variable compression ratio engine ever to enter production. This design allows the 2.0-litre VC-Turbo engine to adjust its compression ratio to optimise power and efficiency on demand.

It combines the power of a 2.0-litre turbocharged gasoline engine with the torque and efficiency of a four-cylinder diesel engine. As a compelling alternative to diesel, it also challenges the notion that only hybrid and diesel powertrains can deliver both high torque and efficiency.

The model is central to Infiniti's strategy for the development of all future autonomous drive support systems, which it says should ensure the driver retains ultimate control over their vehicle - in keeping with Infiniti's focus on driver engagement - while providing a proactive approach to safety.

ProPILOT Assist technologies in the car react autonomously to certain driving situations, supporting the driver with a range of empowering 'co-pilot' features.
