Luton named as most expensive airport for parking

Date: 17 July 2017   |   Author: Daniel Puddicombe

Luton airport has been named as the most expensive airport to park at this summer, according to new research.

A study conducted by insurance company Admiral found a two-week stay in the airport's standard on-site car park costs  £191 - £126 more than the price of parking at Exeter airport during the same period.

The firm compared the prices of parking at 30 airports across the UK for a two-week summer break from 22 July to 5 August.

Admiral found the average cost of parking for two weeks is £111. London City Airport was deemed to be the second most expensive on £181, followed by Gatwick (£175).

The insurer also found disparity between different terminals at the same airport, with a stay at Gatwick's North terminal costing £175 compared with £167 at the South terminal. Heathrow, meanwhile, charges £10 more (£156) if you want to park at T5 compared with 2, 3 and 4.

Gatwick, however, tops the charts when it comes to on-site premium valet parking, with a two-week stay at the North terminal costing £629 - nine times more than East Midlands, where it costs £68 - and significantly more than the South terminal's price of £395.

"We all know that an overseas holiday in the summer time can be costly but our investigation has revealed that holidaymakers can end up feeling short changed before they've even boarded the plane," said Admiral's head of service Alistair Hargreaves. "This study demonstrates that airport parking prices are a postcode lottery with extortionate price discrepancies for the same 2.4m-wide car parking space, depending on where you are flying from."

He added: "Families rarely travel lightly. It's important to them the places they leave their cars are convenient so they don't feel exhausted before they've taken off. It also needs to be a place which is safe and secure so they have complete peace of mind. By planning ahead and researching other car parking options, such as those off-site, and factoring these prices in to the total cost of the holiday before booking anything, consumers can make sure there are no surprises."
