New Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace unveiled

Date: 03 March 2017   |   Author: James Richardson

First details of the all-new Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace SUV have been announced ahead of the car's unveiling at this year's Geneva motor show.

Sitting between the Tiguan and the Touareg in Volkswagen's SUV range, the new car will rival the Audi Q5, Ford Edge, BMW X3 and Land Rover Discovery Sport when it goes on sale later this year. Advanced sales of the new car will begin in May with first cars arriving in Europe in September.

Measuring in at 215mm longer overall than the standard Tiguan, the Allspace also has a longer wheelbase, which allows it to come with the option of seven seats. In five-seat configuration, there's 760 litres of boot space available, while if the second row of seats is folded down, this increases to 1,920 litres of load space.

There are three trim levels to choose from - Trendline, Comfortline and Highline - with entry-level models coming with the likes of 17-inch alloys, air-con, a touchscreen infotainment system and a leather multifunction steering wheel as standard.

Comfortline adds silver roof rails, silver exterior trim, an electric tailgate, automatic parking and a leather gearknob. Top-of-the-range Highline models add three-zone climate control, keyless entry and go, hands-free boot operation and full LED headlights. These top-spec models also get adaptive cruise control, 18-inch alloys and ambient interior lighting.

In terms of design, both inside and out, very little has changed compared to the standard Tiguan crossover. Just like that car, the Allspace is available in either on- or off-road specification. With the off-road package specified, there's underbody protection for the engine, while the front bumper has also been slightly re-shaped to improve the car's approach angle, to help it deal with steep inclines while off-road.

Buyers will have the choice of three petrol and three diesel engines, all of which are turbocharged four-cylinder units displacing between 1.4 and 2.0 litres. The petrols manage 150, 180 and 220hp respectively, while the likely more popular diesels manage 150, 190 and 240hp. Most fleet buyers are likely to go for either the 150 or the 190hp diesel, the former of which manages 40.9mpg officially, even with four-wheel drive attached. This equates to 135g/km of CO2 and a 29% BIK rating. Go for the two-wheel drive model and these numbers will improve.

Four-wheel drive is standard on all models with more than 150hp, and is available as an option on the 150hp models, while these models can also be had with the choice of either a six-speed manual or a six-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. The latter of these is standard on those cars with more than 150hp.

It'll go on sale in the spring and although we haven't had confirmation of UK prices as yet, we do know that, in Germany, it'll start at around ?30,000, which equates to approximately £26,000. Expect to pay a little more than this when it arrives in the UK, however.
