Next Nissan Leaf to be equipped with all-in-one pedal

Date: 20 July 2017   |   Author: Daniel Puddicombe

Nissan has announced the next generation of its all-electric Leaf will come with a pedal that allows drivers to accelerate, decelerate and stop using one pedal.

Known as the 'e-pedal', the Japanese brand claimed it will "transform the way we drive", adding that the technology is the world's first one-pedal operation that allows motorists to bring the car to a stop and resume driving instantly.

Nissan added that drivers could cover around 90% of their driving needs with the one pedal, claiming it makes driving in heavy traffic and during city commutes easier by reducing the amount of movement from one pedal to the other.

However, Nissan said the brake pedal will need to be used for "aggressive braking situations".

The next generation of the Leaf is set to be revealed on 6 September. Although little is known about the new model at this stage, last month Nissan announced it will offer partial autonomous driving capabilities.

The car will feature the firm's Pro Pilot technology, which enables driverless operation on single-lane roads by controlling steering, acceleration and braking. Nissan said the device would assist drivers in heavy traffic or during long commutes.

The Japanese firm added that it hopes to eventually allow vehicles to navigate city-centre junctions by themselves.

"The ultimate embodiment of Nissan Intelligent Mobility, the new Nissan Leaf will be the most advanced, accessible EV on the market today," Gareth Dunsmore, director of electric vehicle at Nissan Europe, said last month. "Adding ground-breaking Pro Pilot technology to the new Nissan Leaf will prove invaluable in unlocking many of the benefits of electric vehicles, creating less congested, cleaner cities for future generations."

The technology is also due to be introduced on the Qashqai by the end of the year, with the firm hinting in December 2016 that by 2020 ten Nissan and/or Renault cars will be sold with the technology.

Last December, the company released a report suggesting self-driving vehicles could add as much as 17 trillion Euros to the European economy by 2050, with the boost in earning equating to 5.3% in GDP over today's levels.
