Seat has revealed a shortlist of nine names for its initiative inviting members of the public to name the brand's new large SUV, which is due to arrive in the UK next year.

According to Seat, it received 10,130 suggestions in total after launching the competition in June.

The nine shortlisted names are all taken from Spanish geography and have passed three different rounds of assessment to ensure they fit in with Seat brand values, are easy to pronounce and are legal.

The shortlisted nine names are:

  • Abrera
  • Alboran
  • Aran
  • Aranda
  • Avila
  • Donosti
  • Tarifa
  • Tarraco
  • Teide

Seat says it will now conduct several focus groups in its main markets in order to select at least three finalists.

The finalists will then be revealed during a press conference at the Frankfurt motor show in September; the public will then have until 25 September to vote for their favourite name.

The name that receives the most votes will win ?Seat says it will confirm the name of the large SUV by 15 October.

The new SUV will be marketed as the Spanish brand's flagship model and is expected to seat up to seven people.

"The figures speak for themselves," said Luca de Meo, president of Seat. "We are very happy with the results of this initiative, which has managed to engage more than 130,000 people from 106 countries and reconnect the brand with Spanish society and fans all over the world, and we would like to thank everyone for participating. The time is fast approaching when we will all know what the name of Seat new SUV will be."

To date, Spain's geography has provided the names for 13 models: Ronda, Ibiza, Malaga, Marbella, Toledo, Inca, Alhambra, Cordoba, Arosa, Leon, Altea, Ateca and Arona.
