Schools urged to rent out empty parking spaces to plug funding gaps

Date: 11 July 2017   |   Author: Daniel Puddicombe

Schools closed over the summer holiday are being urged to rent out empty parking spaces to 'needy' motorists to help plug possible funding gaps.

According to online parking marketplace yourparkingspace.co.uk thousands of spaces could be lying empty during July and August.

The firm said renting out spare parking spaces could form part of a solution to budget shortfalls for many schools, particularly those located near to town centres and railway stations.

The website said if each of England's 25,000 schools rented out two parking spaces from Monday to Friday for six weeks at £7 a day, £10.5 million would be raised, equivalent to the salaries of 467 newly-qualified teachers.

"Cash-strapped schools in the right locations are potentially sitting on a parking goldmine," said Harrison Woods, managing director of yourparkingspace.co.uk. "With budget restraints hitting hard on the public purse strings, this could be the ideal way to earn additional revenue from land that is effectively vacant for six weeks or more."

He added: "When you consider how many thousands of schools there are across the UK, then this potentially equates to hundreds of thousands of spare car parking spaces in July and August, which could be a rich source of income.

"Many schools are located in urban areas and close to town centres, railway stations and the like, making them ideal for car owners looking for somewhere cheaper to park than a traditional car park."
