Three of the UK's largest supermarkets have cut the price of fuel by up to 2p a litre from today.
Sainsbury's was the first to do so, followed swiftly by rivals Morrisons and Tesco.
According to Sainsbury's, it is "putting more back in the pockets of its customers on the road".
Sainsbury's has 309 filling stations, Morrisons has 333 and Tesco has 500 stations.
"At Sainsbury's we always aim to provide our customers with fantastic prices and great quality across every one of our products and services, so we hope this price drop will help them keep costs down over the summer ? whatever the weather," said Izzy Hexter, fuel buying manager at Sainsbury's.
Roger Fogg, Morrisons services director, said: "We'll always make sure we have the cheapest fuel prices in the area."
The RAC welcomed the fuel price reductions: "This is great news for motorists and we hope it will spark a fuel-cut frenzy on forecourts across the country," said fuel spokesman Simon Williams. "Supermarkets are proving that they are prepared to react to falling wholesale prices by passing on the benefit to families just ahead of the busy summer holiday season."
