Plug-in hybrid version of new BMW 3 Series revealed

Date: 16 November 2018   |   Author: Sean Keywood

BMW has announced details of the plug-in hybrid version of its new 3 Series saloon.

Badged 330e, the model is powered by a 2.0-litre, 184hp petrol engine, and an electric motor that generates a continuous output of 68hp and a peak output of 113hp.

Under normal driving conditions, this means a total output of 252hp, but this can be increased to 293hp by activating extra battery boost.

The powertrain is paired with an eight-speed automatic gearbox.

The 330e is claimed to be able to cover up to 37 miles on electric power alone, with a combined fuel economy of 138mpg and CO2 emissions of 39g/km.

It will be available as a basic model, and also in SE, Sport Line and M Sport trim.

Standard equipment will include an interior preheating and pre-conditioning system, and parking assistant including reversing assistant.

Charging related digital services will also be available, with the sat-nav recommending nearby hotels, restaurants, cafes and tourist attractions when a public charging station is selected, as well as forecasting whether that station will be occupied on arrival.

The 330e will go on sale in July 2019, with prices yet to be confirmed.
