Kia reveals diesel mild-hybrid powertrain

Date: 15 May 2018   |   Author: Sean Keywood

Kia has announced it will be installing a diesel mild-hybrid powertrain in models in its range.

The new EcoDynamics+ powertrain will make its debut in the Sportage SUV during the second half of 2018, before being introduced to the Ceed small family car in 2019.

It features an electric motor that provides up to 10kW of extra power, reducing the diesel engine's workload during acceleration.

The system also allows a moving stop-start function, enabling the diesel engine to switch off automatically during in-gear deceleration and braking.

The battery recovers energy from the diesel engine's crankshaft when the car is decelerating or driving downhill.

Kia says the system is compatible with both manual and automatic transmissions, and with the former will reduce CO2 emissions by up to 4% in the upcoming WLTP test, and by 7% under the current NEDC test.

Kia says the system can be adapted for front, rear and four-wheel drive vehicles, and will also be adapted for use with petrol engines.

The manufacturer also says that the system will have minimal impact on practicality, with the required 48V battery located beneath the boot floor.

This battery is also able to connect to the vehicle's on-board power supply, meaning the regular 12V battery and the starter motor can be smaller.

Kia says the new powertrain makes it the first manufacturer to offer mild-hybrid, conventional hybrid, plug-in hybrid and fully electric vehicles, with a fuel-cell electric vehicle set to follow in 2020.

Full prices and specs for vehicles fitted with the new powertrain are yet to be confirmed.
