New Mercedes A-Class unveiled

Date: 05 February 2018   |   Author: Sean Keywood

Mercedes-Benz has taken the wraps off its new A-Class hatchback.

Headline features include the brand's new MBUX computer system, which incorporates artificial intelligence capable of learning drivers' preferences over time, and Hey Mercedes voice recognition technology, billed as Mercedes' version of systems such as Apple Siri and Amazon Alexa. The new A-Class is the first car to be fitted with this system.

A pair of 7in touchscreens are standard, with one or two 10.5in touchscreens optional.

Initially, the new A-Class comes with two engine choices; a 1.5-litre diesel with 115hp and a 1.4-litre petrol offering 163hp.

Official fuel economy figures are 68.9mpg for the diesel and 53.3mpg for the petrol, while CO2 emissions are 108g/km and 120g/km respectively.

A 2.0-litre petrol engine will join the range this summer.

From launch, the new A-Class will be available with a seven-speed automatic gearbox only, with a six-speed manual following later this year.

In terms of driver assistance systems, active brake assist and active lane keeping assist are both standard, with an optional driving assistance package adding semi-autonomous driving systems previously seen on the S-Class luxury car.

These include distance and steering assist, and extended blind spot assist, which warns of passing cyclists when the car is stationary.

The A-Class also comes with a rear collision detection system that automatically applies the brakes if the car is hit from behind when stationary, reducing the risk of injury from the car jolting forwards.

Mercedes says interior and luggage space are increased compared with the outgoing model, with the wheelbase now 30mm longer and the front wheels 14mm further apart.

Mercedes says full specifications and prices for the new A-Class will be announced on 5 March, but it is understand prices will start from around £24,700 for the diesel auto, with manual cars set to be around £1,600 cheaper when they go on sale.

Petrols, not available in entry-level SE trim, will start from around £27,500 in Sport trim.

Deliveries will start in June.
