Volvo introduces new engine in XC40

Date: 21 February 2018   |   Author: Sean Keywood

Volvo has announced a new three-cylinder petrol engine, which will make its debut in the XC40 compact SUV.

The new 1.5-litre Drive-E direct injection engine is the first three-cylinder unit the company has ever produced.

Volvo says the new engine has been designed for future integration into a plug-in hybrid drivetrain, which is due to be added to the XC40 range in the future, along with a pure electric powertrain option.

The new three-cylinder engine was developed by Volvo using the same modular design as its existing range of four-cylinder Drive-E engines, and will be made on the same production lines.

It will initially be available in the XC40, badged T3, with a six-speed manual gearbox, with an optional eight-speed automatic to follow next year.

Alexander Petrofski, Volvo senior director for cluster 40, said: ""Our new three-cylinder engine is an exciting development for the XC40 and for Volvo in general.

"This compact engine design provides the flexibility we need as we introduce more powertrain options for XC40 customers."

Elsewhere in the XC40 range, the previously announced top-level Inscription trim is now available to order, with features including 18in, 19in, 20in or 21in wheels, unique skid plates, side window and grille mesh chrome, plus model-specific paint colours.

Inside, Inscription adds a newly designed crystal gear knob on cars with automatic transmission, along with Driftwood deco inlays.

The XC40 is also now available with an exterior styling kit that offers brushed stainless steel skid plates, lower door trim mouldings, integrated dual tailpipes and a new roof spoiler.

UK prices for the XC40 T3 start from £27,905, with Inscription versions available from £30,405.

The first customer deliveries are expected this summer.
