BMW 1-series coupe revealed

Date: 28 June 2007

BMW 135i

BMW has revealed a coupe version of the 1-series with this low-res image posted on the firm's official UK website yesterday.

The new small BMW will go on sale in the UK in November initially available as a 120d, 123d and super-quick 135i.

The availability of a 135i coupe marks the first time BMW's twin-turbo 3.0-litre petrol engine has been available in the 1-series. BMW claims the 306PS 135i is capable of 0-62mph in 5.3 seconds and has a top speed of 155mph, yet still achieves an official fuel figure above 30mpg and a CO2 figure of 220g/km due to elements of BMW's green Efficient Dynamics programme.

However, it will be the two diesels that will most appeal financially to business car users. A twin-turbo 2.0-litre diesel, revealed by BusinessCar earlier this week in the 123d hatch, powers the 123d coupe, which is capable of 0-62mph in 7.0 seconds and has a CO2 figure of 138g/km. This CO2 output is low enough for the new coupe to slot into the lowest diesel benefit-in-kind tax band of 18%. The 123d coupe is capable of 54.3mpg thanks to BMW's Efficient Dynamics technology, which includes stop-start, brake energy regeneration and low rolling resistance tyres.

The 177PS 120d coupe comes in at 128g/km, 58.8mpg and has a 0-62mph time of 7.6 seconds.

The 1-series coupe is 4360mm long (133mm more than the hatch) and 1934mm wide (1mm more). The slight increase in body size means the boot space rises from 350 litres to 370 litres. A standard 60:40 rear seat split permits greater load flexibility allowing for items to be stored in place of one or both rear seat occupants.

Prices are expected to be revealed nearer the car's on-sale date.
