S-type banished as Jag reveals slick four-door future

Date: 03 January 2007

The bold new C-XF concept - launching officially 6 January at the Detroit Motor Show - heralds the future of four-door saloons from Jaguar.

The car - already revealed to be the basis for the S-type replacement on sale in spring 2008 - also gives major clues as to how the current XJ could be transformed. Jaguar's head of advanced design, Julian Thomson, told BusinessCar: "It's time to move on. We still want to interpret that positive Jaguar heritage but we want to do it in a more emotional way, rather than just rearranging certain design cues."

The saloon concept with coupe looks and profile features the familiar 420PS 4.2 V8 petrol engine, but expect the 2.7 V6 diesel to take most sales (the V8 diesel from the Range Rover will not feature).

The good news is that the production XF version should retain about 85% of the concept C-XF's content. A higher roofline for more rear passenger space, bigger headlamps for technical and legal reasons, and conventional 'grab' exterior door handles instead of hidden ones will be the key exterior changes, while the deep-set grille and shape and Bentley-style mesh should all stay. Inside, there will be fatter seats for comfort, a more conventional dash and more familiar controls, but some of the ambient blue lighting effects could remain.

Elements of the prototype 'JaguarSense' system - using sensors that react to the sweep of your hand as you pass over them to activate and push various controls - are also due for production.

The final production XF will be shown at the Frankfurt Motorshow in September 2007.
