Audi expects big business car success with A5

Date: 23 March 2007

Audi is predicting success for its A5 in the business car arena, with the new coupe expected to enjoy a 60:40 sales ratio in favour of fleet.

The German brand is looking for around 8000 sales in a full year for its new coupe, which is slightly bigger than its big rival, BMW's 3-series Coupe and based on the platform that will underpin the next Audi A4, due next year.

Audi has confirmed that all five of the new car's engines meets Euro5 emissions regulations, making it one of the first to hit the new standards that haven't even got a confirmed timescale for implementation.

The A5 gets a revised version of the excellent MMI system that controls the ventilation, audio and satnav, as well as a new eight-speed multitronic auto gearbox. The petrol engines are also slightly upgraded compared to their usage in the A6, with a bit more power but better economy and emissions.

Audi has also confirmed an adoption of the same emissions-reducing technology parent company Volkswagen calls Bluemotion. The A3 is the first vehicle to benefit, with the 1.9 TDIe getting revised gear ratios and ultra-low resistance tyres to cut CO2 emissions to 119g/km from the standard 1.9 TDI's 143g/km. The car's on sale in September, with pricing to be announced nearer to launch.

Audi has also announced that the A8's 4.2-litre V8 is heading for the Q7 off-roader this summer.
