The start point for the best source of fleet information

Peugeot 407 2.2 HDi - One Minute Test

Date: 03 October 2006

Price: £20,927

What's new: The new 2.2-litre 173PS diesel, developed jointly by Ford and PSA Peugeot-Citroen and already driven in Citroen's C5, makes its way into Peugeot's 407.

Excellent: The Peugeot 407's mile-munching abilities are impressive, with comforting ride, little noise penetrating the cabin and a punchy engine.

Good: The distinctive rounded looks still look fresh, even if the gaping front takes some getting used to. Combining 170PS and an average fuel economy of 46.3mpg is a good effort too.

Average: Rear seat passengers aren't overcome with head or leg room, while the car's dyniamic capabilities aren't up with the class best, especially the over-assisted steering.

Poor: The financials. The P11D puts the Peugeot among more premium badges such as the Saab 9-3 and Honda Accord, both of which destroy the 407's 36.6ppm figure.

Verdict: A decent engine in a decent car, but you'll have to really want one to justify the costs.
