BusinessCar has been through all the MOT test data for 2007 - released as the result of a freedom of information request - to discover which brands and models are the best and worst performers. Tristan Young reports

The second reason is that other manufacturers with high levels of fleet sales do far better than Vauxhall.

Fiat also took the line that MOT results were determined by maintenance and level of use, but Peugeot, which came second last in the charts, took a different approach. "These are bad statistics. Our internal warranty and breakdown data is at direct odds with the MOT data," a Peugeot spokesman said. He added that model life cycles may also play a part in the MOT data with cars early in their life suffering more issues than cars later in their life. For example, in 2004, the year of data examined here, the 407 was all-new.

Renault, the worst performing brand here, said in a statement: "We do not believe that the VOSA data provides any meaningful insight into the reason for any particular MOT failure. The data is simply not deep enough and does not take into account use or maintenance of the vehicle."
