The other big change comes under the bonnet, as the Jazz gets two entirely new i-VTEC petrol engines. We drove the 1.4-litre in ES trim, which is predicted to share the majority of business sales with the lower spec 1.2 SE.

The two models are priced only £500 apart, but the levels of kit on the 1.4 ES make it by far the better option. The premium brings ESP anti-skid control, a reach/rake steering wheel, power-folding mirrors, rear electric windows, a cooled glove box and more. Sadly, the SE doesn't offer the flexible floor boot storage system.

Even more sadly, we can't bring you a precise breakdown of costs as Honda has yet to confirm the necessary details, despite the Jazz going on sale in a month.

The 100PS 1.4-litre engine is never going to turn the Jazz into a hot hatch, but it doesn't need to. It gets to 62mph in 11.5secs, and feels competent on the motorway, but it is around town where the Jazz is much more at home. The engine is also as close to silent as is surely possible when idling.

Visibility is generally good, with a small window in front of the wing mirror making it easy to tackle tight manoeuvres. Unfortunately, the sweeping bonnet disappears to the extent that it is tricky to see the front of the car.

The new Jazz is not drastically different, but it is a sound development and improvement on what was already a good car.
