Renault has installed its new 150PS 2.0-litre diesel in the Grand Scenic range, giving an even wider choice to those wanting a mini-MPV.
However, it’s not clear if the range needs widening.
We tested the car with an auto gearbox, which puts a hefty dent in the economy and emissions figures for the otherwise excellent engine. Oddly, though, the less powerful and older 136PS 1.9 diesel, coupled to an auto, gives better mpg, lower CO2 and quicker acceleration. This means you’d have to really want a smoother, quieter diesel to fork out the extra for the 2.0-litre car.
The six-speed automatic in the 2.0-litre car is also less than perfect, hunting for gears and often leaving the driver in the wrong gear in town. And although Renault makes grand claims about the safety of its cars, the Grand Scenic is not fitted with anti-skid control as standard. It’s a £300 option across the range.
Verdict: Stick with the 1.9-litre diesel version
