10 things we learned about the Ford Transit Custom this week

Date: 08 July 2016   |   Author: Alisdair Suttie

Category: Medium Van
Key rival: Vauxhall Vivaro
Model tested: 2.0 TD 105 270 L1 Base
Price as tested: £26,620

It's the UK's favourite van, but does it score a hit with Al Suttie?

1 - You've got to love the way the Ford Transit just slots into your life, whether you thought you needed a van or not.

2 - With a Focus-like dash, familiarity and style are large parts of the Transit's appeal, coupled to the upright, high-set driving position.

3 - The only disappointment on the dash was no USB connection to plug a phone charger into with this Base model.

4 - Still, Bluetooth and a decent stereo make up for this to some extent, but I'd head towards Trend trim for more standard equipment.

5 - The 105hp 2.0-litre turbodiesel in this entry-point model is smooth and the six-speed manual 'box very accurate.

6 - It's a pity it's not that bit quicker, though, as you sometimes feel traffic bearing down on you after pulling out of a junction.

7 - Once on the move, the Transit Custom rides superbly running light or fully loaded, and it handles nimbly.

8 - Part of the driving appeal is the tight turning circle, which allows the Ford to nip through town or park like a champ.

9 - As for the load space, it's plenty big enough in this model to fit in three Euro pallets or, in our case, all manner of odd shaped boxes with ease.

10 - Then there's the additional load flap that had us finding excuses to use it just because it's there.
