The start point for the best source of fleet information

BMW 220d xDrive M Sport Coupe

Date: 12 December 2017   |   Author: Debbie Wood

Facelifted 2 Series brings an upgrade in cabin materials and more tech.

The BMW 2 Series may be the German carmaker's smallest coupe, but that hasn't stopped it making a big impression. In fact, over 140,000 of the 2 Series Coupe and Convertible have been sold since it went on sale in 2014.

Despite being on the market for just three years, so much progress has been made by BMW during that time - including launching new models and bringing the latest innovative technology to market - that even the stylish 2 Series range is starting to look its age. Cue the mildest of facelifts to keep it in line with the competition.

What's new?

Introduced in July, the biggest change for this latest 2 Series Coupe is in the cabin, which sees a significant upgrade in materials and finishings throughout. There's a new instrument panel and centre console with sliding cupholder too, plus premium stitching on the Sport and M Sport models.

Outside, LED headlights are now fitted as standard, while other subtle design enhancements include a tweaked front and rear bumper, gloss black touches and new alloy wheel designs. Standard specifications have also been enhanced to include equipment like the latest-generation iDrive software and navigation, and a reworked steering system, while options now include adaptive cruise control.

Powerful diesel

Under the bonnet of our test car is a 2.0-litre diesel serving up 190hp and 400Nm of torque. It's a powerful and smooth engine that offers enough pull to feel quick away from the traffic lights. Officially, the 0-62mph sprint is achieved in 6.9 seconds and the car has a top speed of 140mph.

There's a small penalty for opting for the xDrive system; namely 3mpg in official fuel economy and 7g/km in CO2 but it adds a hefty £3,000 to the price of the car, which is a lot of money, even if the advantage of extra grip means more traction on rougher surfaces and greater handling agility.

In driving terms the 2 Series Coupe is not quite as refined or exciting as its 1 and 3 Series brethren; however, it's still accomplished and easy to drive on the motorway and in the city. Ride quality is good overall and the steering expertly weighted, although the automatic gearbox felt a little slow to react at times.

Behind the wheel

BMW is starting to be renowned for its plush cabins and these latest changes aim to bring the 2 Series up to scratch along with the rest of the range. The iDrive infotainment system is as impressive as ever and overall the cabin is a comfortable and well-equipped place to sit. There are a couple of dated features, though, including the buttons around the centre console and the TFT driver display, plus the absence of an electric handbrake is disappointing considering the car costs over £32k.

M Sport models come loaded with luxuries like sat-nav, cruise control, sports seats, an M Sport suspension, BMW's connected drive services including an emergency call system and online services, plus the aforementioned LED lights and larger 18in alloy wheels, which look great but add a further 5g/km of CO2.

Interior space is good throughout, only six-footers will struggle for room in the rear and there are plenty of storage options throughout the cabin, while boot space is decent at 390 litres.

These latest revisions help raise the bar for the 2 Series in terms of looks and interior quality, but the car still feels like the poorer relative of the 3 Series, despite costing almost as much, and misses that little extra sparkle out on the road.

This isn't the version we'd pick either. Save yourself the cash and opt for the two-wheel-drive model. However, the extra styling touches for M Sport models are well worth the investment in our book.
