I've a natural aversion to being told I'm wrong, which is why gearshift indicator lights usually irritate me. But Audi has it sorted.

In the bottom corner of the A4's dash display is a little number showing the gear you're in, and an unobtrusive green number appears next to it when the car thinks you should have shifted up or down.

Maybe it's too subtle given its eco purpose of lowering emissions by nudging you into a higher gear, but it's there and more often than not I'll obey it because I don't feel preached at. It's another slice of the classy quality that sums up the A4.
