Techies 2009 - Best Car Security Device: VW Intelligent Key

Date: 25 August 2009

Unlike almost all of the other categories where we knew who the likely entrants would be, the Best Security Device Technology Award was won by a device BusinessCar has never written about before - Volkswagen's Intelligent Key.

The Intelligent Key maintains a record of whether the vehicle has been locked and alarmed. By simply pressing a button on the key and looking at the red light indicator, an owner can check, even when they are not with the car, the 'locked' status of their vehicle. And while there are other locking and security systems that let you know if you've locked your car, the VW system goes one very useful stage further.

Not only does this give peace of mind to owners, allowing them to avoid the classic 'did I lock the car or didn't I?' scenario, it can also provide vital evidence to insurance companies and business car managers as they can confirm by interrogating the key's data chip whether the vehicle was secured by the driver before any theft or break-ins occurred.

The system is currently standard on the Volkswagen Touareg large off-roader and the brand's luxury Phaeton. However, the car manufacturer has hinted that if system is successful then it could be rolled out to a wider range of Volkswagens.

The VW Intelligent Key is simple to use, useful and clever, which is just what the BusinessCar Techies are all about - it's a worthy winner.
