Awards 2010 - Mini-MPV: Ford S-max

Date: 26 January 2010

Galaxy

Snatching the Mini-MPV award from last year's champion, the VW Touran, is Ford's segment-straddling S-max. Now more than three years old, the S-max won the Business Car of the Year prize in its debut season and sits between the C-max and Galaxy in Ford's three-strong people carrier line-up. It's one of the most popular MPVs, thanks to its combination of good looks, practicality and it being the best-driving car of its kind.

Revisions to the S-max's 140PS 2.0-litre diesel in 2008 cut CO2 to below the 161g/km capital allowance boundary, and that will fall further this spring, when the mid-life facelift is launched. The revised model will feature three 2.0-litre diesel engines of 115, 140 and 163PS power outputs, all with the same 152g/km CO2 emissions and 49.5mpg economy figures.

The facelifted car will also be the first model to get Ford's new Ecoboost SCTi engine, which uses turbocharging to lower emissions without sacrificing power. In addition, higher-spec Titanium and Titanium X Sport S-max models will get LED daytime running lights, as well as increased offerings of safety and comfort equipment. Which could well be enough to keep the popular people carrier on top in next year's BusinessCar Awards.
